Afro Style

Say it loud! I’m Black and I’m Proud! In the 60’s there was an emergence of black pride. Women and men of color proudly showed off their texture in big bold picked out fro’s. Whether your style was like Foxy Brown or Angela Davis, your natural was out of sight. Some rocked it in a beautiful jet black or a honey blonde. Many women chose to get away from the lengthy straightening process that made them fit in with mainstream America. The Afro style showed us that we could embrace our hair as it grew from the root. It differentiated African Americans from their white counterparts and their straight hair. By the end of the 60’s everybody was rocking the afro thang! No matter what the color, the bigger the better! You can’t talk about the afro without mentioning the afro pick. The pick showed off the black power fist of pride, showed support for the movement. This was a variation of the traditional African comb that dates back to the 14th century. From the 90’s to present day times the afro rocks on. Some women have small ones. Modern day fro’s just might make their sixties brothers and sisters say Right on! The reemergence of the style can be seen in such artist as Leena James, Jill Scott and India Arie. Each artist sports her fro a little different than the rest. Versatility is key. Shape and texture may have changed but the afro as a style choice is here to stay.

Samuel Jackson Not Having His Say

In the new movie "Lakeview Terrace,” Samuel Jackson plays the kind of man who says whatever is on his mind. But in real life, the actor is not so candid about what he's thinking or would like to say. Jackson says growing up he was more like his latest character who says and does what he feels, that is... until his mom puts him in his place. Jackson said his mom kept him from wagging his lips by popping him on the lips. It was a lesson Samuel never forgot. The actor still thinks of things he'd like to say but he keeps them to himself.
